My first good works
were articles for the Revista Geográfica Universal, calendars for the Souza Cruz tobacco company, and Brazilian wildlife albums promoting Nestlé's Surpresa chocolate bars featuring the Atlantic Rainforest, Amazonia, Meadows and Savannas, Drylands, the Coastline, and Ocean Islands. I have a real soft spot for this project, as I know that I influenced thousands of children all over Brazil, awakening their interest in wildlife.
After the Revista Geográfica, I began publishing in all the main Brazilian magazines, as well as Foto (Sweden), Grands Reportages, Okapi and Terre Sauvage (France), Periplo (Spain), Hörzu and Das Tier (Germany), BBC Wildlife (U.K.), International Wildlife, Ranger Rick, Wildlife Conservation, Natural History (U.S.A.), Viva! (Poland), Bonniers Specialmagasiner (Denmark), Spick (Switzerland), Sinra (Japan), Birds International (Australia), etc. I also devoted much time to producing books on nature. In 1983, Jardins e Riachinhos, appeared, with text by Guimarães Rosa, winning the Jabuti Prize. This was followed by Mata Atlântica and Pantanal, with poetry by Carlos Drummond de Andrade (1984 and 1985), In addition to taking part in group shows, I have had some one-man exhibitions, although I am not a great fan of displaying my work in this way, as its range is very limited. In 1971, I exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Bahia (Solar do Unhão, Salvador) and the Paço das Artes, organized by the São Paulo Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureaus; São Paulo Art Museum (1978); Copenhagen Town Hall in Denmark (1980). I also exhibited at the National Fine Arts Museum in Rio de Janeiro, as well at the Cinelândia Subway Station in 1977 and 1998. I shared a show with my friend Aníbal Sciarretta, entitled Amazônia & Patagônia, at the Brasil-Argentina Cultural Institute, and the Salão Negro in the Brazilian Congress Building, as well as the National Museum. I have also shown my works at other one-man and group shows in Brazil, as well as Mexico, New York, London and Bonn.
I particularly enjoy photographing "difficult species", or those threatened with extinction. I relish these challenges, and also - as a member of the human race - I feel responsible for their survival. This is perhaps why I published over a dozen pictures in the Wildlife as Canon Sees It series, which appeared monthly in the National Geographic Magazine (U.S.A.). I rarely participate in photography contests in Brazil, as they are almost always a way of getting photographs at low cost, without truly enhancing the value of the works and the photographers. But I have made some exceptions: in 1972 I ranked third in the competition run by Realidade magazine, and in 1973/74 received an honorable mention in the Nikon International Contest. In 1974, I took third place in the Kodak National Contest, and in 1986, one of my photographs received an Honorable Mention in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition. In 1987, I took first place in its From Dusk to Dawn category. Other Honorable Mentions in this highly respected event followed, in 1992, 1994 and 1996.
